COLUMBUS, OHIO – Senator Sherrod Brown’s campaign today launched “African Americans for Sherrod,” a group of community leaders, activists, and elected officials who are supporting Sherrod for re-election because of his strong record of supporting the issues important in the African American community, including education, job growth and fair access at the ballot box.
The group will mobilize support for Sherrod, advise the campaign, and speak about Sherrod’s strong record.
“I am proud to support Sherrod Brown in his bid for re-election,” said Congresswoman Marcia Fudge. “Sherrod is leading the fight for Ohio’s middle class. On issues from the auto rescue to affordable student loans to ensuring fair and legal access to the ballot box, Sherrod Brown has always advocated for the issues that matter to Ohio’s 11th Congressional District. He stands with us and now we need to stand with him to send him back to the U.S. Senate.”
“Sen. Sherrod Brown is a champion for the African American community and Ohio’s middle class – that’s why I’m fighting for his reelection,” said Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman. “He fought to defeat Gov. Kasich’s Senate Bill 5, stop state Republicans from enacting a voter ID law which would have disproportionately disenfranchised our community in Columbus and across Ohio and he’s fought against attacks on voters’ rights throughout his career. As he fights to stop interest rates on student loans from doubling and end China’s practice of manipulating its currency, which hurts our middle class and costs Ohio’s jobs, I am honored to support Sherrod and committed to ensuring his voice for our community remains as loud as ever.”
“No one in elected office fights harder every day to bring jobs and create opportunities for Ohio’s African American community than our very own U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown,” said Congressional Candidate Joyce Beatty. “From his efforts to defend workers’ rights and voters rights, stop China from manipulating its currency, expand access to affordable health care and prevent the doubling of interest rates for Federal Stafford loans that so many of our children rely on to afford their education, Sherrod fights tirelessly, for us. I could not be prouder to support Sherrod Brown reelection to the U.S. Senate.”
“Senator Sherrod Brown fights every day to create good paying jobs for Cincinnati’s African American community and we’re lucky to have him as a partner,” said Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory. “He is fighting to stop China’s currency manipulation, which has cost Ohio an estimated 100,000 jobs over the last decade, and he led the fight in Ohio to rescue our auto industry. Ohio’s African American community and middle class families need Sherrod Brown in the Senate now more than ever so he can continue fighting for us.
“We absolutely need Senator Sherrod Brown to continue representing us in the U.S. Senate,” said Cuyahoga County Councilman Julian Rogers. “He is a champion for the African-American community, and he will never let the special interests drown out our voices. Sherrod supports increased access to affordable health care, he introduced a bill to keep student loan rates low, and he is fighting against efforts to limit voting rights. It is my honor to support his re-election, and between now and November I am committed to making sure our community is aware of his hard work and long list of accomplishments for Ohio’s middle class.”
“I am honored to have the support of these leaders in the African American community,” said Senator Brown. “I have joined with them and countless other community leaders to work to ensure Ohioans can get quality education and affordable student loans, job opportunities, and fair and legal access to the ballot box. I am committed to fighting for these principles, and I pledge to continue that work in the U.S. Senate.”
Sherrod Brown has always been a friend to Ohio’s African American Community, and with too many Ohioans still looking for work, his leadership is needed now more than ever. Senator Brown is continuing to fight for Ohio’s African-American community by ensuring we stop China’s currency manipulation which has cost thousands of jobs, pushing for job creating investments like the auto-rescue, and by standing up to laws disproportionately affecting minorities, particularly as it pertains to voting rights. Senator Brown’s efforts have earned him a 100% rating from the NAACP.
The launch of “African Americans for Sherrod” will be accompanied by a new Facebook page and a section of the web site to keep educators up-to-date on campaign issues and news. Ohioans can join the Facebook page by clicking HERE.
