USA Today Editorial:

But now comes a bipartisan plan that would end too-big-to fail once and for all. Proposed by Sens. David Vitter, a Louisiana Republican, and Sherrod Brown, an Ohio Democrat, it is the kind of aggressive and simple approach that should have been adopted long ago.

Their plan would require that institutions with more than $500 billion in assets — namely, the six mentioned above — meet a capital reserve requirement of 15%. Simply put, that means these banks would have to set aside 15 cents in liquid assets for every dollar of liabilities. (Smaller banks would still have to meet a complex, but less stringent, set of rules contained in the Basel III treaty signed by the United States.)

“These murals are representations of Cincinnati,” Brown said Friday.

Uncle Sam might do some heavy lifting to save the nine old, endangered murals from Union Terminal.

Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) recently read about the plight of the at-risk mosaics in an Enquirer exclusive. He plans to help Cincinnati apply for federal funds and work with local businesses to bring these eight-ton works of art back home.

“These murals are representations of Cincinnati,” Brown said Friday. “When you see them, you see, first, the nameless people who built this country. Then you see the mural is about, say, Procter & Gamble.”

"...this problem does not have to touch another family, or take another life."

By Sen. Sherrod Brown:

Although it is shocking that the national death toll from prescription overdoses has doubled in recent years, what is even more alarming is that in our state, it has tripled. In fact, since 2007, more Ohioans have died from accidental prescription drug overdoses than auto accidents. This is unconscionable. Ohio families deserve help and they deserve answers.

We know that easy access to prescription drugs has fueled the prescription drug epidemic that engulfs communities in all of Ohio’s 88 counties. But fortunately, this problem does not have to touch another family, or take another life. Prescription pain medications, such as Oxycodone, morphine, and methadone – which are largely responsible for increasing overdoses and deaths – can be disposed of safely.

The recent garment factory fire in Bangladesh has prompted U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and seven other Democratic senators to call for stronger efforts to promote worker safety in that country.

In a letter, the senators urged major U.S. and European retailers to seek legally-binding global accords to ensure worker safety instead of relying on voluntary or self-monitoring initiatives by factories. They urged businesses to sign the Accord on Fire Safety in Bangladesh, which requires inspections and upgrades to Bangladeshi factories. Many major U.S. retailers have declined to sign the accord, fearing it would open them to litigation.

Members of the United States Senate on Thursday unanimously voted to confirm physicist Ernest Moniz, Ph. D. to lead the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) said the move will be very good for southern Ohio.

Brown met Moniz last month to discuss Ohio priorities and ensure that the American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, which he said would help create 4,000 jobs in southern Ohio, will receive support of the DOE. He also pressed Dr. Moniz to continue the Administration’s support of the cleanup at the DOE site — a project currently employing 2,400 people, Brown said — and to remain committed to working with community partners and the labor force to ensure the cleanup remains on pace.

Brown said Medicaid lock-in programs enable the kind of close monitoring needed to prevent high-risk patients from personally abusing or selling opioids.

“In recent years, more Ohioans have died from prescription overdoses than auto accidents,” Brown said. “The national death toll from prescription drug overdose doubled and it has actually tripled in our state. Families want answers and families want help. We know that easy access to prescription drugs has fueled the epidemic that engulfs communities in all 88 counties. This problem does not have to touch another family or take another life.”
