ICYMI: Sherrod Brown Celebrates Restored Pensions with Workers in Mahoning Valley

NILES, OH – Yesterday, Sherrod joined workers in the Mahoning Valley to celebrate the pensions Sherrod saved through the Butch Lewis Act. When Wall Street gambled away workers’ retirement, Sherrod led the fight to secure the pensions of over 100,000 Ohioans and named the bill after an Ohio Teamster.
Sherrod continues to fight to make sure every Ohioan can retire with dignity by leading the fight to restore the pensions of the retired Delphi workers who lost their retirement after the company went bankrupt.

WFMJ: Ohio Workers Join Sherrod to Celebrate Their Saved Pensions

Morning Journal: Senator Brown says election is a matter of trust
David Skolnick – August 21, 2024

  • Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown said his reelection effort comes down to who voters trust: him or Bernie Moreno, his Republican challenger.
  • “I’ll put (my) record up any day against Bernie Moreno,” said Brown, D-Cleveland, after a Tuesday campaign stop at the United Steelworkers Local 2155 union hall in Niles. “Cheating his employees, having to pay $400,000 in back wages, always looking out for himself. That’s a pretty clear comparison to voters of the Mahoning Valley.”
  • Brown reiterated points made during the campaign that Moreno settled wage theft lawsuits after a Massachusetts court ordered him to pay more than $400,000 to two former employees for failing to pay overtime in violation of that state’s labor laws and for selling the Buick Envision, a vehicle made in China when Moreno was a car dealer, despite saying a number of times he refused to do so.
  • Brown said GM closed Lordstown because of its “greed and politicians of both parties and presidents of both parties that sell out workers. Bernie Moreno is part of that crowd. He’s wrong and that’s why people don’t trust him and that’s what this should be about.”
  •  Brown spoke to about 75 people at the USW hall in Niles.
  • Brown talked about the Butch Lewis Act, which was included as a provision in the American Rescue Plan Act passed in 2022. Brown sponsored the provision that secured pension relief for more than 100,000 Ohioans that were in endangered pension plans for 30 years.
  • Norm Wemet, president of the Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans, said: “No one works harder than Sherrod Brown when it comes to fighting to protect the pensions and retirements of American workers.

WKBN: Sherrod Celebrates Butch Lewis Act with Workers in the Mahoning Valley

WKBN: “[Sherrod] was campaigning in Niles today, talking to union members. Brown appeared at the United Steelworkers hall this afternoon. He talked about the Butch Lewis Act – named after an Ohio teamster. Brown says the legislation helped save the pensions of more than 100,000 people in Ohio.”

Sherrod: “I talk to somebody in Niles, or talk to somebody in Akron or in Struthers or in Ashtabula. Get an idea. Take it back. Find a Republican to cosponsor… And then we passed it.”

WKBN: “Brown says he’s also working on a similar legislation called the Susan Muffley Act to preserve pensions for up to 20,000 Delphi retirees.”

Mahoning Matters: ‘Thanks for saving my pension.’ Why did Sherrod Brown meet with area workers in Niles?
Kelcey Norris – August 21, 2024

  • U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown visited the United Steelworkers labor union in Niles to meet with retirees, union workers and Mahoning Valley voters ahead of November’s election.
  •  Sen. Brown highlighted his work to pass the Butch Lewis Act during his speech at the United Steelworkers.
  • “As workers, we expect dignity and respect of the work we do first and foremost,” said Norm Wernet, president of the Ohio Alliance for Retired Americans. “That extends into our life after work.”
  • The act was introduced by Sen. Brown, and local supporters like Ed Barker, have been working since 2014 to ensure workers and their families enjoy retirement security.
  • “If you love this country, you fight for the people who make it work and I will continue doing that every single day. I’m grateful to have Ohio workers by my side in our fight to make sure hard work pays off for everyone,” said Sen. Brown.
