COLUMBUS, OH – In a recent op-ed for the Toledo Blade, United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain highlighted Sherrod Brown’s record of standing with workers and “
work[ing] tirelessly to secure historic investments to bring union jobs back to Ohio and America.”
Fain noted the difference between Sherrod’s unwavering support for workers and Bernie Moreno’s pattern of “screw[ing] workers time and time again.” While Sherrod joined UAW workers on the picket line last year to fight for fair wages and safer working conditions, President Fain pointed out that Moreno “was nowhere to be found” and said workers’ calls for a fair contract were “unreasonable” – making it clear that Bernie Moreno won’t fight for Ohioans.
Toledo Blade: Sen. for working-class Ohioans couldn’t be clearer
UAW President Shawn Fain – September 14, 2024
- After Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis failed to offer contracts that reflect the record profits our members have made for the Big Three, workers at auto plants in Detroit, Toledo, and Wentzville, Mo., walked off the job and onto the picket line as we began our historic 46-day Stand-up Strike.
- We didn’t know how long the strike would last, but we knew that if we stood together, we could win our fair share of the Big Three’s massive profits. We also knew U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown would have our back every step of the way.
- Sherrod stood in solidarity with us on the picket lines last fall in Toledo and in Streetsboro, too, when our strike expanded to a second Ohio plant.
- He strongly supported our demands and told the media why autoworkers — and all workers — deserve a better deal and how the Big Three have been fleecing the American consumer.
- Sherrod has always been on the side of the working class — even when it meant going against his own party.
- He has fought against bad trade deals — from NAFTA to the Trans-Pacific Partnership — no matter which president negotiated them. As we learned during the Stand Up Strike, Sherrod fights for the people.
- Last year, when Sherrod was walking with workers on the picket line, his opponent Bernie Moreno was nowhere to be found. Instead of listening to worker concerns and calling on the Big Three to offer a fair contract like Sherrod did, Bernie Moreno said their demands were “unreasonable.”
- While Sherrod has always fought for fair wages for workers, Moreno refused to pay his own employees the overtime they earned. He even shredded evidence to try and get away with it when his employees sued him. For Moreno, stiffing workers and retaliating against them isn’t a one-time thing. It’s a pattern that makes it clear workers can’t trust him to fight for their interests.
- Sherrod has worked tirelessly to secure historic investments to bring union jobs back to Ohio and America, including pushing to make sure that all electric vehicle workers at joint ventures like Ultium Cells are folded into the national UAW contract.
- Thanks in part to Brown’s support, Ultium production workers in Lordstown secured an historic local agreement earlier this year and will make $35 an hour by 2027, 112 percent more than before they joined the UAW.
- Meanwhile, Moreno owned a GM dealership where he sold the Buick Envision: a crossover SUV manufactured and imported from China. It’s the kind of car we called a “slap in the face” because it would lead to plant closures and job loss for U.S. workers. Moreno sold them anyway because it boosted his bottom line.
- [Moreno has] screwed workers time and time again, and you’d better believe he will do the same in the Senate if he’s elected in November.
- Ohioans deserve better than Bernie Moreno. They deserve a Senator who will fight to keep good-paying jobs in Ohio and who will stand with them when they take on corporate greed in their fight for justice on and off the job.
- That senator is Sherrod Brown.
