- Republican U.S. Senate nominee Bernie Moreno, during a recent campaign stop, said it’s “a little crazy” that many suburban women vote based on abortion rights, and he questioned why women over the age of 50 care about abortion at all.
- “You know, the left has a lot of single-issue voters,” Moreno said during a town-hall meeting in Warren County on Friday, according to a recording obtained by Cleveland.com /The Plain Dealer. “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion’s it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’”
- Moreno continued: “It’s a little crazy, by the way, but, especially for women that are like past 50, I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”
- As members of the audience laughed, Moreno added, “Oh, thank God my wife didn’t hear that one. I’d get in trouble.”
- Last year, 57% of Ohio voters supported putting language in the state constitution guaranteeing abortion rights, rolling back efforts by the Republican-controlled state legislature and Gov. Mike DeWine to curtail abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.
- Moreno, a Cleveland car dealership owner, called himself “100% pro-life without exceptions” during his 2021 U.S. Senate campaign. Earlier this year, during the 2024 Republican U.S. Senate primary race, Moreno said he supported a federal ban on abortions after 15 weeks into a pregnancy, as well as giving states the option to enact tougher restrictions.
- Brown, a Cleveland Democrat seeking a fourth Senate term, has co-sponsored federal legislation to allow abortion without limits before fetal viability (about 24 weeks into a pregnancy, which was the standard under Roe v. Wade).
- In a statement, Brown, a Cleveland Democrat running for a fourth Senate term, said, “Bernie Moreno has once again shown us exactly who he is and that he thinks he knows better than the 57% of Ohioans who made themselves clear on this issue.
- “As a man over the age of 50,” Brown added, “I care deeply about a woman’s right to make health care decisions for herself – for my daughters, my granddaughters, and all Ohio women, regardless of their age. Despite the majority of Ohioans agreeing, Moreno has made it clear he would overturn the will of Ohioans by passing a national abortion ban.”

Bernie Moreno: “A lot of suburban women that are like ‘listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for afnybody else.’ Ok, a little crazy, by the way. But, especially for women that are like past 50, I’m thinking to myself, I don’t think that’s an issue for you.”

Newsweek: Bernie Moreno Attacks Ohio Women Over Abortion: ‘Little Crazy’

- “You know, the left has a lot of single issue voters,” Moreno said during a town hall on Friday, according to a video obtained by NBC4. “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. - Ohio State Representative Allison Russo, a Democrat, wrote that Moreno said “the quiet part out loud, mocking women as ‘a little crazy’ for wanting to make our own health care decisions. He also clearly doesn’t care that 57% of Ohio voters think these decisions are none of his damn business.”
- Bill Kristol, a conservative political commentator, wrote: “I dunno Perhaps women past 50 care about their daughters? Or about younger women in general? Or about personal freedom?”

Political Wire: Bernie Moreno Says Women Are ‘Single Issue Voters’
Taegan Goddard – September 23, 2024
- Ohio U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno (R) questioned why a certain group of women would be concerned about abortion during an event in the state, WCMH reports.
- Said Moreno: “You know, the left has a lot of single issue voters. Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ … OK. Rachel Maddow, MSNBC: “Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno saying any woman over 50 doesn’t have any reason to support reproductive rights. Abortion rights, you kidding? Because you know women over 50, ‘I’m thinking to myself,’ he actually says it. ‘I’m thinking to myself, I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’ Wow. You know, unluckily for Bernie Moreno in Ohio, running against Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, women in Ohio, even women over 50, apparently, do still have the right to vote, even if he doesn’t think they have a right to an opinion.”
MSNBC: GOP’s Moreno: Women’s focus on abortion rights is ‘a little crazy’
Steve Benen – September 24, 2024
- Ohio’s Republican candidate for U.S. Senate questioned why a certain group of women would be concerned about abortion during an event in the state. NBC4 obtained a video recording from a Warren County town hall on Friday, where GOP Senate hopeful Bernie Moreno accused suburban women of being focused solely on their ability to get an abortion.
- “You know, the left has a lot of single issue voters,” Moreno said late last week at a town-hall-style event. “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ … OK. It’s a little crazy by the way, but — especially for women that are like past 50 — I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”
- Yes, how hilarious. A far-right Senate candidate described women’s interest in abortion rights as “a little crazy” and suggested post-menopausal women should probably be indifferent to the future of reproductive rights in the United States — because, you know, they can’t get pregnant.
- What a cut-up.
- In case this isn’t obvious, it was just last year when voters in the Buckeye State voted on a statewide measure on abortion, and reproductive rights advocates scored a big victory, despite Ohio’s shift to “red state” status. Those are, of course, many of the same voters Moreno is appealing to now.
