Republican Women Call Out Bernie Moreno for “Shallow,” “Flip” Comments Mocking Ohio Women

COLUMBUS, OH – Ohioans from both parties continue to call out Bernie Moreno for his “flippant” and “shallow” comments mocking Ohio women for wanting to make their own health care decisions.

Former U.S. Congresswoman Republican Deborah Pryce and former Ohio Attorney General Republican Betty Montgomery called out Moreno’s “flip remark[s]” that make it clear he “doesn’t think [Ohio women] have a right” to make their own health care decisions.

Moreno’s comments have been widely condemned, including by Republican Nikki Haley and a former aide to John Boehner, who called out Bernie Moreno for insulting and “undermin[ing]” Ohio women.

WSYX: History-making Ohio GOP women critical of Bernie Moreno’s abortion remarks
Darrel Rowland – September 25, 2024

  • Here’s what Moreno said Friday in a GOP event near Cincinnati…
  • “You know the left has a lot of single-issue voters. Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’
  • “OK, a little crazy, by the way, but especially for women that are like past 50, I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”
  • Betty D. Montgomery, the first woman in Ohio history elected attorney general and state auditor, didn’t like the comments about abortion.
  • “Just because I’m of a certain age doesn’t mean I don’t care about it. If I were to believe that, I shouldn’t care about whether or not we worry about prostate cancer for men. Or I shouldn’t worry about whether childhood cancer is taken care of.”
  • Nor did Deborah Pryce, the most powerful woman to serve in the U.S. House in modern Ohio history.
  • “Women over 50 have daughters, granddaughters, nieces, and friends,” said Pryce, now a retired attorney. “And women over 50 are thoughtful about what their vote means for the future of our country, not just what it means for themselves.”
  • “Quite frankly, that flip remark can be really damaging, I think,” said Montgomery, interviewed in her Reynoldsburg front yard.
  • “It was not well thought out. It’s very short-sighted and reflects a very shallow thinking.”
