U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown rose to address the 200 or so supporters gathered for a reception after his second-term swearing in Thursday when he let them know he was waiting for word on the impending birth of his second grandson.
Daughter Elizabeth interrupted as she approached her dad with cell phone in hand: “Dad, Emily had her baby!”
Brown grabbed the phone expecting to see a photograph. Instead, it was daughter Emily Brown on the line from New Haven, Ct., where she lives with her husband, Matthew McDonald. She’s on break from law school at Yale.
The senator relayed the information to the crowd as she told it to her dad.
“It’s a boy! First name: Leo,” he said, phone pressed to ear. “Middle name: Sherrod. Leo Sherrod Brown-McDonald. Hyphenated.”
Then Ohio’s senior senator wept as his wife, Connie Schultz, the former Plain Dealer columnist, told the crowd of friends, “I’m sorry, we’re having a family moment.”
