Some Good News on Social Security

I want to share good news about Social Security and for the millions of Americans who depend on it:

“President Biden on Friday fired Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul, a holdover from the Trump administration… with policies designed to clamp down on benefits and an uncompromising anti-union stance.” – The Washington Post

Social Security is a promise to Americans that if you work hard and pay into the system, then you’ll be able to retire with dignity. But during their tenure, Saul and his Deputy Commissioner David Black did everything they could to undermine Social Security by:

  • Making it harder for older, disabled Americans to access essential income
  • Denying disability benefits for older, disabled Americans who aren’t fluent in English
  • Slowing down the process for disabled Americans to receive COVID-19 stimulus payments
  • Forcing disabled recipients to wade through more red tape

Saul and Black also practiced union-busting tactics and forced harsh contracts to strip away their own employees’ rights.

I was the first member of Congress to call for Saul and Black’s removal, and I’m glad President Biden and his Administration have taken action. Social Security is a bedrock for our country’s middle-class, and I look forward to working with new Social Security leadership to protect and expand this American institution for everyone who earns it and counts on it.

With gratitude,
