$1 Million Awarded To Help Grand Lake St. Marys
The Evening Leader – ST. MARYS — Conservation efforts in the Grand Lake St. Marys Watershed received a boast Wednesday. In a joint news release, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and Gov. Ted Strickland announced $1 million in new funding would be directed to expand conservation practices in the watershed. Brown, who serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee, stressed the importance of keeping the watershed clean as well as Grand Lake St. Marys.
“Grand Lake St. Marys is a critical resource for the region and its clean up must be a priority,” Brown said. “I am proud that these federal dollars will help local farmers reduce runoff in the watershed, providing cleaner water and thriving wildlife habitats.”
It is the third year Brown worked with his colleagues in Congress and Strickland to secure funding for the watershed that rewards farmers for their role in helping to improve water quality. The majority of the money will go toward the establishment of buffer strips along creeks that pour into Grand Lake St. Marys and to plant cover crops.
