43 former workers of Wire Products Co. in Cleveland to get help from Trade Adjustment Assistance pro

Cleveland Plain Dealer – Forty-three former employees of Wire Products Co. in Cleveland became eligible for federal job retraining benefits this week after the U.S. Department of Labor found that the jobs were lost because of foreign competition.

The Trade Adjustment Assistance program will offer those employees extra unemployment compensation, a greater subsidy on health insurance premiums, and as much as three years of job retraining benefits.The Labor Department this year has granted Ohio $17 million to award through the TAA program, which is meant to help employees transition into new careers that are in higher demand.

Dan Collins, vice president of sales and marketing for Wire Products, said the wire component manufacturer has had three rounds of layoffs since late 2008. The company brought some employees back in recent months because of a slight increase in business, and it now employs about 120, he said.
