Avon workers to get federal aid
cincinnati.com – WASHINGTON — Hundreds of workers at the Avon Products plant in Springdale will get access to federal job training funds, Sen. Sherrod Brown announced Wednesday.
Avon, which sells beauty care products, will close its Springdale manufacturing plant and 590 workers will lose their jobs by mid-2012, the company announced last year. A returned-goods facility at the plant also will close.
The closures are part of a multiyear restructuring plan to save the company $430 million annually. As part of the plan, work will be outsourced to countries with cheaper labor costs. Production at the Springdale plant will move to sites in Morton Grove, Ill., and Celaya, Mexico.
Trade Adjustment Assistance funds are for workers who lose their jobs or have hours or wages reduced as the result of foreign trade.
