Brown battles fees
Wapakoneta Daily News – Nearly half of a regional grocery store’s sales are charged to debit and credit cards, a corporate executive says, which comes with a fee that most shoppers have no idea is there.
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, is pushing a provision to help reduce these swipe fees, passed as an amendment by the Senate as part of a larger bill to reform Wall Street. The provision would reduce the amount small businesses pay in swipe feesfor customers using credit and debit cards.
“Small business always gets shortchanged when they accept a debit card, and it also means that customers pay more at the store, more at the pump, more wherever they are whether they pay with cash or with plastic,” Brown said during Wednesday’s media teleconference.
