Congress discusses higher oil tax for Gulf spill cleanup costs

WKYC – WASHINGTON D.C. — Will Congress pass a higher tax that could wind up tapping your wallet to pay for the massive Gulf oil spill cleanup?

A measure is being discussed that would quadruple an 8-cent-per barrel oil tax to 32 cents.

President Obama wants BP to pay the cleanup costs. The company estimates those so far at $350 million and gushing higher every day.

Senator Sherrod Brown says, "The tragic spill of the Gulf Coast will affect the environment and local residents and businesses, but it should not affect Ohio taxpayers. BP made $5.6 billion in profits in the first quarter of this year. They must be held responsible for all cleanup costs and damages."
