Energy bill called boon in rebates for area

Toledo Blade – Northwest Ohio residents would be eligible to receive an estimated $26.3 million in rebates under proposed legislation that supporters say would boost Ohio manufacturing by providing rebates on energy-saving products such as windows and insulation.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) yesterday outlined how the proposed Home Star Energy Retrofits Program would help lower energy costs for consumers while creating new demand for Ohio-made products.

"This is about increasing demand for products manufactured in Ohio, putting people back to work, and helping consumers lower their energy costs," the senator said in a statement. "Just as Cash for Clunkers helped get our auto industry back on track, the Home Star program would help bring new purchase orders to Ohio manufacturers and new work for contractors performing home retrofits."

The senator estimated that Lucas County residents could expect to see almost $9 million in funding if the proposed bill is approved, and Wood County residents would get about $2.4 million.
