It’s now OK to swim, ski in Grand Lake St. Marys

Dayton Daily News – There is good news and more good news for Grand Lake St. Marys … it’s about time.

First, the Ohio EPA has lifted the ban on recreational use of the water in Grand Lake St. Marys. Recent tests showed levels of the previously detected algal toxin microcystin have fallen below the World Health Organization guidelines for concern. Advisory signs have been removed from beach and ramp areas.

EPA officials say the water is safe for swimming, water skiing and all other recreational use. They advise against ingesting untreated lake water.

Second, $1 million in new funding will be made available to help prevent future pollution from farm runoff.

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown announced the program last week.

“Grand Lake St. Marys is a critical resource for the region and its cleanup must be a priority,” Brown said. “I am proud that these federal dollars will help local farmers reduce runoff in the watershed, providing cleaner water and thriving wildlife habitat.”
