Laketran backs legislation for emergency transit funds

The News-Herald – It is far from a surprise, but Laketran is in full support of legislation introduced this week that would provide $2 billion in emergency funding to transit systems across the country.

Laketran General Manager Raymond Jurkowski said as much in a letter to U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, who is one of six senators who introduced the Public Transportation Preservation Act of 2010 earlier this week. Laketran Board of Trustees President Kevin Malecek and United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America Local 1834 Chairman Richard DeGraff on Thursday signed the letter to show support.

"We commend you and the other senators from Illinois, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island," the letter reads. "Transit systems throughout the country are facing an unprecedented crisis. Diminishing state and local resources to support the operating budgets of transit systems are leading to devastating service reductions, fare increases and employee layoffs."
