Local officials’ reactions to Obama’s remarks on Iraq
The News-Herald – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio: "This redeployment is an important step, but there remain 50,000 troops in Iraq and we must not be complacent about that. The Iraqi government needs to ensure stability in the region, and those 50,000 American men and women deserve to come home as soon as possible. While I voted against the Iraq War and opposed our involvement in the region, the courage and sacrifice of our service members are to be commended. I hope the president outlines when and how he will bring the rest of our troops home and a time frame for that effort."
U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette, R-Bainbridge Township: "We can and should honor and recognize the troops who have endured multiple tours over the last seven years, and pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. I hope and pray the sectarian violence in Iraq abates, and the Iraqis get their government to function."
