Lorain Fire Department gets $48,000 grant for equipment

The Morning Journal – LORAIN — The Lorain Fire Department has been awarded $48,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, according to Sen. Sherrod Brown's office.

In total, $1,791,400 has been awarded across Northeast Ohio. The funds can be used for vehicle acquisition, operational and safety equipment updates, according to Brown's press secretary, Megan Dubyak.

Fire Chief Tom Brown said he was very excited for the grant and that it couldn't have come at a better time. "Some of our equipment is over 20 years old," he said. "I wanted to buy this equipment a year ago, so this grant is a great one for our department."

Brown said the department will match $12,000 from their budget to the grant, for a total of $60,000. He said the money will be used specifically to purchase vehicle extraction equipment, such as the Jaws of Life, and to place new technology on the tower truck.
