Ohio getting nearly $24 million for clean-energy job training; Summit County to benefit
Akron Beacon Journal – Ohio is getting nearly $24 million in federal stimulus funds to train workers for clean-energy jobs.
The announcement came today from U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Ohio's congressional delegation, including U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and U.S. Reps. Betty Sutton, D-Copley Township, and Tim Ryan, D-Niles.
Five grants from the federal Energy Training Partnership program invest in diverse public-private partnerships to retrain workers in what was called ''the clean energy and efficiency industries,'' including clean-energy public transportation, wind, solar, geothermal, manufacturing, retrofitting and construction.
The initiative includes $5 million to train workers in Akron, Cleveland, Toledo and Youngstown in energy-efficient building construction, retrofitting and manufacturing. The International Training Institute for Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Industry will direct that grant.
The program is designed to retrain 1,200 workers overall and also covers 17 other cities in Michigan, Missouri, Illinois, California, Texas and New Mexico.
