Brown: Millions in fund plan to dredge Cleveland, Lorain harbors
WKYC – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) said that $10,680,000 is available to dredge the Cleveland harbor and $443,000 is available to dredge the Lorain harbor.
The monies are in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ FY2011 work plan.
Cleveland Harbor, a major commercial port, is dredged annually. Failure to dredge the harbor will reduce the channel dimensions — negatively impacting the local and regional economies — according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
“Cleveland Harbor is a vital part of the commercial, recreational, and cultural life of Northeast Ohio,” Brown said. “The Army Corps of Engineers annual dredging can help keep the Harbor healthy and clean for generations to come.”
Brown echoed the same sentiments about the Lorain harbor.
As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Brown worked to protect the funding for this and other critical harbor and dredging projects throughout Ohio.
