Brown pushes loan guarantee for Piketon

Columbus Dispatch – Sen. Sherrod Brown last week urged senior White House officials to approve a federal loan guarantee

to USEC of Maryland that would help finance a modern uranium-enrichment facility at the former U.S. Department of Energy Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon.

In letters to White House chief of staff William Daley and White House budget chief Jack Lew, the Ohio Democrat said the government’s loan-guarantee program is designed for “precisely the type of project” planned by USEC for Piketon. “It would be a disservice to our nation and our national security to treat the company’s loan application … the same way as any ordinary commercial front-end nuclear- or renewable-energy project,” he wrote.

Brown wrote that if the project is successful, it will create 8,000 jobs across the country, including 4,000 in Ohio.
