Brown wants constituents to pressure GOP to support extension, expansion of payroll tax

Ashtabula Star Beacon – Sen. Sherrod Brown is counting on constituents to pressure Republican lawmakers to support an extension and expansion of the payroll tax holiday set to expire at the end of this month.

“I’m hopeful pressure from the public will help them change their minds,” Brown said in a telephone press conference Wednesday.

Deborah Setliff, spokeswoman for Rep. Stephen LaTourette, R-Bainbridge, said the congressman’s constituents have not received the memo.

“No, I think the phone has been pretty quiet,” Setliff said.

Brown said a vote on the extension, and the corresponding means of paying for it, should come up in the Senate today or Friday. But because Democrats want to pay for it with a 3.25 percent surcharge on taxpayers who make more than $1 million annually, Republicans are not showing any interest in extending the middle-class tax relief.
