Deputy’s widow supports alerts

Bucyrus Telegraph Forum – The widow of a Marion County deputy sheriff killed in the line of duty supports a bill to establish a national alert system to help catch suspects who target law enforcement officers.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, is co-sponsor of the bill to start a Blue Alert system.

There are 11 states that have such a system, modeled after the Amber Alert system, which distributes information nationally about children who go missing. There isn’t a Blue Alert system in Ohio.

The system would disseminate information about suspects to law enforcement, media and the public.

Sara Winfield, of Marysville, whose husband, Marion County Deputy Sheriff Brandy Winfield, was murdered on duty in 2004, supported the bill in a media conference call Wednesday.

She said this year has been particularly violent for law enforcement officers.
