Exports best way to grow, U.S. official says
Columbus Dispatch – Ohio businesses should look outside the country's borders to increase sales and become less vulnerable to economic cycles, federal officials said yesterday in Columbus.
"We have to be aware of the rest of the world," said Francisco Sanchez, undersecretary of commerce for international trade.
Sanchez and Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, yesterday discussed that aim and called attention to President Barack Obama's goal of doubling the country's exports by 2015 at an event attended by Ohio business executives at Ohio State University. Brown was present in person; Sanchez made his comments by phone because of a problem with his flight.
Sanchez and Brown heard about barriers to exports, including high tariffs levied to do business in Brazil and the harmful effects of government corruption in Russia.
