Lorain will add 12 firefighters with $1.7 million grant

Lorain Morning Journal – LORAIN — A federal grant of $1.7 million is expected to help Lorain bring back seven laid-off firefighters and to hire five more, officials said.

A formal announcement is expected as soon as today.

“This is going to guarantee that I’ve got stations open,” Lorain fire Chief Tom Brown said. “This is going to give us the proper manpower the majority of the year.

“This is just going to improve our services and we’re going to operate in a much safer manner for a city the size of Lorain,” Brown said. “This is great news.”

The money is to come through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Staffing for Adequate Fire & Emergency Response, or SAFER, grant program.

The money will allow the city to hire back seven firefighters who were cut last year. Lorain will use its civil service testing to hire five more.
