Mansfield Air National Guard base may not get more planes
Mansfield News Journal – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, is asking the Secretary of Defense to save a plan to add additional C-27J aircraft to the Mansfield Air National Guard Base.
In a letter sent today to Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Brown said eliminating the procurement would be detrimental to the base.
“It’s my understanding the Air Force intends to request the (C-27J) program’s termination,” he wrote. “I ask that you delay a decision on the future of the program until you have met with all stakeholders and have considered ramifications of ending the C-27J procurement.”
The Mansfield base currently has four of the twin-engine, multipurpose cargo planes. Brown, a city native, and other senators have expressed support for a plan to station six C-27J aircraft here and in seven other bases around the country.
That plan appears to be in jeopardy and the future of existing C-27J programs is not clear.
