Ohio Senators Plan Bill To Revive Piketon Plant
WLWT – Lawmakers in Ohio’s congressional delegation plan legislation to allow the Obama administration to spend an estimated $150 million to help a uranium enrichment project in southern Ohio move forward.
U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman announced Saturday that their bill would take $106 million in existing Department of Energy money as well as $44 million in assets at the Piketon plant in the form of “tails,” a byproduct of uranium enrichment.
The funding was absent from a massive year-end spending bill approved Saturday.
The plant would be at the site of a former Cold War-era gaseous diffusion plant that enriched uranium. It would produce enriched uranium for use in nuclear power plants.
