Portage County: Name change for post office to honor Marine

WKYC – A bill has passed the U.S. Senate to rename the Rootstown Post Office on Tallmadge Road after a fallen Portage County Marine.

The mother of the late Marine Sgt. Jeremy E. Murray works at that post office.

A bill sponsored by U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Rob Portman (R-OH) to rename the United States Postal Service office on Tallmadge Road in Rootstown after Portage County Marine Jeremy Murray unanimously passed the Senate Monday night.

Congressman Tim Ryan (OH-17) has introduced companion legislation in the House of Representatives, where the bill currently awaits action from the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

Murray, a native of Rootstown, was on his third tour of duty abroad when he was killed in Iraq in November 2005.

“Sergeant Jeremy Murray was a patriot who selflessly gave his life for our nation. Nothing we can do can fully honor his contribution to our country’s national security and our freedom-but we can pay tribute to his memory by renaming the Rootstown post office in his honor,” Brown said.
