Sen. Brown praises work to expose disease clusters
Chronicle-Telegram – An activist who has pressed for answers about why Wellington had three times the rate of multiple sclerosis of the rest of Lorain County applauded an effort by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown to provide more federal resources to disease cluster areas.
“I think it will be a piece of the puzzle,” said Sally Giar, who has been pressing for answers for more than a decade.
Giar and 16 others with MS were studied by local and state health officials who found the high incidence of the disease in Wellington, according to Robert Indian of the Ohio Department of Health.
The effort by Brown, D-Avon, and other senators to focus on disease clusters around the country, including five Ohio towns, will be good if it brings attention to the issue, Indian said.
“Education would not hurt at all,” Indian said, adding that the state “has done quite a bit” to track disease clusters and draw attention to them.
