Sen. Sherrod Brown Vows to Fight Big Oil
WKBN – A measure to repeal $2 billion in tax breaks for big oil companies failed to pass the U.S. Senate earlier this week.
Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said the oil industry has had its way for way too long and it’s time to put Americans and their pocketbooks first. The senator fought to end subsidies given to big oil companies and in return wanted to use the savings to pay down the federal deficit.
Brown said he’ll continue the fight, but he said it’s time for President Obama to get in the game more aggressively.
“I think he should consider taking oil out of the strategic petroleum reserve, which would help to blunt some of the price hikes,” Brown said. “And I’d like to see the president go on television and announce publicly that he’s going to use the Wall Street reform tools, the consumer protection laws, to go after these companies that are speculating the oil industry.”
