Senate honors Zips as soccer champs
Akron Beacon Journal – The U.S. Senate passed a resolution Wednesday night honoring the University of Akron soccer team for its NCAA Division 1 victory.
The team beat the University of Louisville 1-0 in December.
''The Akron men's soccer team put the entire Zips athletic program on the map,'' U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said in a news release. ''The entire state of Ohio — and now the Senate — stands behind the Zips players and coaches who brought home the national championship.''
He co-sponsored the resolution with U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who said the team's trophy is ''a testament to the long hours, hard work and fighting spirit the Zips showed all season.''
The resolution said the team ''has become a symbol of pride and success to the University of Akron and its surrounding communities.'' Copies will be sent to the university, UA President Luis Proenza and soccer coach Caleb Porter.
