Toledo Blade – Development of a device to prevent a drunk driver from starting a car would get a jolt of federal funding under a bill that U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) said Wednesday he is co-sponsoring.

The bill allocates $60 million over five years for research on technology that would sense an illegal level of intoxication in a driver and prevent the vehicle from operating.

Mr. Brown said its use would reduce the incidence of drunken driving and many of the nearly 9,000 deaths caused by drunken drivers every year.

"We expect, once this is developed and the price comes down, that people will choose to put it in their car, their son or daughter's car.
