WWII medals worth wait for Jackson man, 89

Massillon Independent – JACKSON TWP — Staff Sgt. Charles E. Scharver never saw combat, but he served his country in war. He never marched on a battlefield with a weapon in hand, but he operated a communications switchboard vital to this country’s victory.

And, when he returned home, Scharver never received the medals due to him. Not until 65 years later on the eve of his 89th birthday.

“It means a lot,” the World War II veteran said Sunday as his voice quivered and his eyes filled with tears. “Can’t really say, because so many others earned their medals, too, and they’re gone. I’m just thankful I got them now.”
