Program may speed flood study

Lima News – The Army Corps of Engineers has included its Blanchard River watershed flood control study in a pilot program aimed at finding ways to expedite the corps’ own planning methods.

According to Mike Pniewski, the corps’ program manager for the watershed study, inclusion in the pilot program may speed up ongoing work to develop a comprehensive flood reduction plan.

The study’s selection for the pilot program was mentioned in a letter that Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and U.S. Rep. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green, sent Tuesday to corps officials. The letter urges the corps to complete the watershed study “in a timely fashion.”

The letter also calls flood control “crucial for the region’s future economic viability.”
