Proposal may fund repairs to sewer

Marion Star — The city and 82 other communities may get a boost in renovating sewer systems thanks to proposed legislation announced Thursday by Sen. Sherrod Brown.

Brown, D-Ohio, announced a bill that, if passed, would help communities renovate outdated sewer systems. In a media conference call, he touted the Clean Water Affordability Act as a way to improve water quality while keeping rates affordable for residents and small businesses.

The legislation would help communities eliminate combined sewage overflow systems that, in cases of severe rainfall, collect sewage and storm water.

“Fixing combined sewage overflows is not cheap,” Brown said, estimating in Ohio it could cost up to $6 billion.
