Rootstown U.S. post office honors slain Marine
Ravenna Record Courier – The Rootstown U.S. Post Office is getting a new name to honor the service of a Roostown Marine killed in action.
The facility was renamed the Marine Sergeant Jeremy E. Murray Post Office Building at a dedication ceremony held Monday at the Grace Church of Rootstown.
Marchelle Rogers, post office operations manager, said Murray’s military record was highly decorated.
“Although I didn’t know Sgt. Murray, I read his military record, and frankly it’s impressive,” Rogers said.
Murray died in November 2005 while serving in Iraq. Legislation to rename the facility was initiated by U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan.
…
“To have a post office named after you reveals and reflects your sacrifices to your country … to something other than yourself, and I think that’s really the legacy of this young man,” Ryan said.
Brown said many times when people honor service men and women, they neglect the family sacrifice.
“It’s the least we could do to honor this family,” Brown said. “It’s what we ought to do.”
Ryan said the dedication is another way to remind people how important service is.
“We’re honoring a hero,” Ryan said.
