Rushlow ties for fourth at Scripps National Spelling Bee

Lancaster Eagle Gazette – It’s a good bet that every time Nicholas Rushlow smells or thinks about perfume, he’ll remember the word that ended his chances in the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee finals.

It was the French word “vetiver,” which is a fragrant extract or essential oil from the root of an Indian grass used in perfumery. He spelled it “vetover” instead.

“Um, two in a row,” Nicholas mumbled onstage, referring to the fact that he also did not know his previous word, “rouille,” a peppery garlic sauce used in stews.
