Woman fights to save dogs; blames deaths on chicken treats from China

Morning Journal — …[Candace Thaxton] has written to Sen. Sherrod Brown, who wrote a letter to the Food and Drug Administration urging them to pursue efforts to find the contaminant in the pet food, which the FDA still has not identified.

“The FDA can’t prove what’s making these dogs sick,” she said, and as a result, the company that produces Waggin’ Train treats is not promising financial compensation to any victims. So far, medical expenses have cost the Thaxtons about $4,000.

She also began calling news agencies while Penny was still at the vet, and wrote to congressmen.

“How many people have not seen that warning?” Thaxton said. “How many people are out there; their dog died of kidney failure, and they think like we did, that their dog just died?”

The Waggin’ Train Dog Treats Facebook page is full of wall posts with descriptions of sick pets, personal stories and questions asking why the product is still on the shelves.

Brown wrote in his letter to the FDA, “I urge you to promptly pursue efforts to find the contaminant in these pet foods, alert customers of the dangers of these products, and make sure the products found harmful are pulled from the retail market.”
