World War II veteran finally gets his due

Sandusky Register – A World War II veteran received nearly a dozen medals and awards Monday for his combat service.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown presented Delbert Cole, 93, with 11 war medals during a ceremony at the Ohio Veterans Home in Perkins Township. Cole either lost the medals during a 1969 flood that damaged his Huron home, or he just never received them.

Among the awards was a Bronze Star, given to World War II soldiers who displayed courage in combat.

“This is one of the best things I get to do for the military,” Brown said. “Several years ago, we began to hear from families and soldiers who earned medals in World War II, Vietnam and Korea, but either lost the medals or were destroyed.”
