WKBN: Sen. Sherrod Brown touts new legislation to feed needy families

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-OH, wants to make sure low income children do not go without a meal during the summer months.

Brown spoke with the media on Thursday regarding his upcoming plans, including his Hunger Free Summer Kids Act.

The legislation would provide not only students, but their mothers, with meals over the summer, helping the one-quarter of Ohio children living in households that have experienced hunger. Brown says this would help those kids who rely on school lunches for their only meals during the day, and he said not enough is being done currently to combat the hunger issue.

“Food stamps doesn’t get them there all of the way. There’s still a lot of hungry people in this country, and they’re not lazy,” he said. “They’re hungry because they just don’t have the resources they need, and anything like this is a plus for our country.”

The program would partner with local farmers and producers and create several sites where the students or their parents could receive a box with food.
