Sherrod Brown Campaign Launches “Seniors for Sherrod”

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Senator Sherrod Brown was at the Martin Janis Senior Center today where he launched “Seniors for Sherrod,” a group of seniors working to re-elect Sherrod because of his strong record of fighting to protect Medicare and Social Security. The group will mobilize support for Sherrod, advise the campaign on seniors issues and speak to other seniors about Sherrod’s strong record.

Sherrod was joined by “Seniors for Sherrod” Co-Chair, Bill Adams, a Columbus resident and Army veteran who spent his career working logistics at Andrews Air Force Base for Air Force One. Adams currently sits on several advisory boards including the City of Columbus Veterans Affairs Board and he volunteers his time with Summit’s Trace Health Care Center, a local nursing facility. Also serving as co-chair is Shaker Heights resident, Belle Likover, a senior advocate who served as past Chair of the Ohio Department of Aging Advisory Council and Cuyahoga County Department of Senior and Adult Services Advisory Council. Likover also chaired the boards of the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging Board of Trustees, The Council on Older Persons of The Center for Community Solutions and The Coalition to Monitor Medicare Managed Care.

“Sherrod Brown is nothing short of a champion for Ohio’s seniors,” said Adams and Likover. “When Medicare and Social Security were on the line, Sherrod was there for us, and his voice has never wavered. He has spent his career working against the special interests to ensure that seniors can retire and live with dignity, including making sure they can access health care and affordable prescription drugs. There is too much at stake for seniors this election year, and we need Sherrod back in Washington to continue his dedicated advocacy on behalf of Ohio’s seniors.”

“I am honored to have the support of Bill Adams and Belle Likover – two advocates for Ohio’s seniors who are making a tremendous difference in their communities,” said Senator Brown. “We have made promises to our seniors that we must honor – Medicare, Social Security, affordable prescription drugs. These men and women have worked their entire lives, taken care of their families, and they deserve a quality of life that reflects that. I will never let the special interests drown out the voices of seniors like Bill and Belle, and at a time when there is so much on the line for our seniors, I am working every day in the Senate to ensure that they have a seat at the table.”

Senator Sherrod Brown is fighting every day to protect our seniors and ensure that all Americans have the ability to retire with dignity and respect. He strongly opposes Republican efforts to privatize Social Security, and has repeatedly fought against efforts to end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher system that would result in increased costs for Ohio seniors. Senator Brown has championed legislation that allows seniors to purchase prescription drugs at a cheaper cost and has fought to maintain funding seniors depend on to keep winter heating costs low. Ohio’s Seniors have a friend and ally in Senator Sherrod Brown.

The launch of “Seniors for Sherrod” will be accompanied by a new Facebook page and a section of the web site to keep educators up-to-date on campaign issues and news. Ohio seniors can join the Facebook page by clicking HERE.
