Democrats and Republicans alike: Medicare should be off the table

Republicans want to end Medicare and force seniors to fend for themselves on the private insurance market. And they think they’ve found the perfect way to do it: Threaten to let our country default on its debts unless the destruction of Medicare is included in the agreement.

We don’t have to let the GOP hold our nation’s creditworthiness hostage like this. We can raise our voices to defend our seniors. We can tell Democrats and Republicans alike: Medicare should be off the table.

We’ve seen this play out before. Whether it’s the budget, tax cuts for the middle class, or the debt ceiling, Republicans try to attach savage cuts to the social safety net or huge giveaways to special interests. They say they want to negotiate–but they’re really holding our government hostage.
